DIVINE CHASTISEMENT (I)

Hebrews 12:4-11
[4] You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin.
[5] And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;
[6] For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.”
[7] If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten?
[8] But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons.
[9] Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live?
[10] For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness.
[11] Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Chastisement means severe criticism or punishment; the aim is to ensure discipline. The word "chastisement" originates from the Latin word "castig ire," which means "to chasten, punish, or correct." Divine chastisement refers to the discipline that comes from God Himself.
You might be surprised to find that God chastises His children because you have been told that God is love. While it is true that God is love, He is also a God of justice.
Because of His love for you, He will correct you when you're going astray in order to protect you from ultimate destruction.
The most popular example of divine chastisement in the Bible is embodied by the children of Israel but there are also others. The Bible describes David as a man after God's own heart despite his flaws. When he committed the sin of adultery with Bathsheba, the Lord chastised him through the prophet Nathan (2 Samuel 12:1-14).
Also, when he called for a census against the will of the Lord, the Lord reproved him through Gad the seer (1 Chronicles 21).
Jonah the prophet is another person who was chastised by the Lord when he refused to go to Nineveh. He tried to be smart by getting on a ship to Tarshish but the Lord chastised him by causing a shipwreck. Consequently, Jonah was thrown into the sea where he was swallowed by a great fish (Jonah 1:1-17).
The Lord did not cast these people away but He restored them after they repented.
The purpose of divine chastisement is to restore obedience. Our earthly fathers punish us when we do wrong because they want us to be perfect people. If earthly fathers can chastise us, how much more our Heavenly Father?
The right attitude towards chastisement is repentance, not rebellion.
Being chastised by God is an evidence of His love and care for you. If God doesn't care about you, He would not bother Himself to correct you.
Whenever your spiritual leader corrects you, be humble enough to take the correction and repent.
May the Lord help you to humbly receive His correction, in Jesus' Name.
