Judges 4:15-19
[15] And the Lord routed Sisera and all his chariots and all his army with the edge of the sword before Barak; and Sisera alighted from his chariot and fled away on foot.

[16] But Barak pursued the chariots and the army as far as Harosheth Hagoyim, and all the army of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; not a man was left.

[17] However, Sisera had fled away on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite; for there was peace between Jabin king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.

[18] And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said to him, “Turn aside, my lord, turn aside to me; do not fear.” And when he had turned aside with her into the tent, she covered him with a blanket.

[19] Then he said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty.” So she opened a jug of milk, gave him a drink, and covered him.

Another lesson we learn from Jael is hospitality. In her culture at the time, hospitality was a must. Hosts were expected to take care of their guests and provide for their needs. Jael played the role of a good hostess by covering up her guest with a blanket and offering him milk.

Hospitality is the practice of being friendly and welcoming to guests and visitors. In this case, you receive and entertain them. The Bible enjoins us to be hospitable.

Jael offered Sisera milk and covered him with a blanket. She provided a high level of hospitality for Sisera by treating him like a king. She made him feel a sense of safety. You see, even though she had a goal of destroying the enemy, she did not neglect the basics.

As Christians, the hallmark of our faith and discipleship is love (John 13:35). Love manifests in several ways, including hospitality. How you treat people, whether known or unknown, should reflect your Christianity. Sometimes, your attitude preaches a louder message than your words. You cannot afford to treat people shabbily, no matter who they are. The Lord wants us to be hospitable, of course, with the use of divine discernment.

Just like in the case of Jael, hospitality can also be a weapon. Jael showed kindness to the enemy and got him so relaxed that he wasn't prepared for what was coming. The book of Proverbs 25:21-22 says, "If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, And the LORD shall reward thee." Paul quotes this same scripture in Romans 12:20. Showing love to an enemy is not a sign of weakness or surrender; it is rather a sign of strength and a proof of superior understanding. Your kindness to your enemies increases their punishment; you heap coals of fire on their heads and the Lord rewards you for it.

Beloved, make hospitality a regular practice henceforth. May the Lord baptise you with the spirit of hospitality, in Jesus' name.
